I am interested in understanding the processes that influence heterogeneity in terrestrial ecosystem composition, structure, and function at large spatial scales. My research combines remote sensing and field observations with modeling, focusing on natural and anthropogenic disturbance processes and the role of regional and sub-regional ecosystem heterogeneity in the response of tropical forest ecosystems to disturbance. Other research interests include examining the impacts of large-scale land surface changes on ecosystem function in remaining tropical forests, and pathways of agricultural expansion and deforestation.
